Bill Kulish sought to express himself through art since early childhood: He began painting and playing the trumpet at age five. He also became intrigued by the ability of rocks to become time capsules around the same time: At age six, while visiting his grandmother in Carbondale PA, he spent hours climbing slate shale mountains that were byproducts of coal mining. He remembers sliding down shingles of slate and finding fossils of plants and animals, and being fascinated when he realized that he was viewing million of years back in time. He spent years installing traditional pavers, and enjoyed taking symmetrical blocks of material and avoiding 90-degree angles in the finished product, instead creating brick pathways with organic curves that give the appearance of running streams of bricks. He found his passion in creating concrete surfaces when he realized the versatility of the medium, especially those incorporating the Buddy Rhodes mix, for incorporating art, custom colors, design and features, for both indoor and outdoor applications. As owner of Quintechs, LLC, William likes to reverse engineer every project and over-engineers everything he has built, working with natural stones, rocks, metal, glass, acrylics, traditional pavers, and concrete. He uses a wide range of tools from a 9,000-pound Bobcat, to a five haired oil painter’s brush, to a paper clip, to achieve the details of his vision. He has always been inspired to envision the result and then utilizes or adapts an existing tool, or, in many cases, makes tools, to make the vision a reality. William finds nature to be his biggest inspiration, especially in trying to duplicate the imperfect perfection and to create new things that look aged.
