How to seal Vertical Mix
I am using the Buddy Rhodes Vertical Mix. How should I seal my finished project?
Vertical Mix should be sealed, especially exterior projects, to reduce water infiltration and to keep the project looking new. A silane/siloxane type sealer will limit the amount of moisture by blocking the pores in the material. They also impart minimal color or sheen change. A pump style sprayer is the best tool for application.
Acrylic sealers are another good choice but depending on if they are water based or solvent based, may darken the color a few shades. These also will provide a level of sheen, depending on the starting texture of the project and the number of coats applied. The application technique for acrylic sealers would be to spray or roll or brush the material, but since most projects will be vertical, care must be taken to provide coverage free from application lines or streaks. This is most important for the color enhancement type sealers, as the streaks are common, but can be back rolled or brushed to minimize. Pump type sprayers work best for acrylic sealers but be sure to use a recommended type for the version chosen, meaning solvent resistant type with a solvent based acrylic sealer. No matter what sealer is chosen, applying two thin coats is always better than one thick one.
